Rajneesh Khattar, Group Director, Informa Markets in India, highlighted the scope and urgency of the opportunity in the sector prior to the fourth edition of The Battery Show India.

India will have to increase its energy storage capacity manifold since it requires a total of 236 GWh worth of battery energy storage systems (BESS) till 2031-32; the government has cleared 50 GWh worth of BESSs under the Green Energy Corridor project, Khattar said in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Such developments came up for discussion prior to the fourth edition of The Battery Show India scheduled from October 22-24 at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida.

The discussions revolved around building capabilities domestically in batteries, large-scale grid BESSs, power electronics, smart grids, battery management systems, manufacturing, and research and development activities.

This was preceded by the government clearing a scheme worth Rs 50,000 crore for setting up 50 GWh of BESSs. This is under the wider plan of Rs 1.86 lakh crore aimed at developing renewable energy and transmission infrastructure.
