Somes Bandyopadhyay, CEO of NTPC stated that the organisation intends to bring 500 MWh of battery energy storage capacity online commercially within the current financial year under the government’s 3,000 MWh initiative.

Bandyopadhyay said, "Very soon we will be able to put 500 MWh BESS in commercial operation and target to commission a further 500 MWh by this financial year" at the 18th India Coal Summit.

The deployment of battery energy storage systems is growing at an unprecedented pace, after many government initiatives aimed at increasing capacities.

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam has also joined the ranks of organisations developing battery energy storage systems on a massive scale in the nation to assist utility companies in managing peak demand loads.

Battery energy storage systems could prove to be extremely helpful in meeting peak demands for electricity as well as maintaining grid stability through storing surplus power when the load demand is minimal or renewable energy generation is high.
