The independent power producer Adani Power, initiated construction works for a 3.2 GW coal-fired power plant at Chapar, in the Dhubri district of Assam, India (Adani Power press release, 21/09/2026). The INR480bn (USD5bn) project will consist of four units with an output of 800 MW each. As stated by the company, the plant will operate using ultra-supercritical (USC) technology, will be of high efficiency and will have modern environmental protection equipment with the commissioning phase due from December 2030. The power plant will be supplying residential, commercial and industrial consumers as well as improving electricity generation capacity in Assam.
Adani Power was chosen to build the project following a tender held in October 2025 and the company received the letter of award from Assam Power Distribution Company in November 2025. The power plant represents one of the Adani Group’s investments into power generation projects in Assam along with two pumped storage power plants with a total capacity of 2.7 GW and a cost of INR150bn (USD1.6bn). The company operates 18.3 GW of power plants in India.
The installed thermal power capacity of India was 330 GW in 2025, which was 56% of its total installed capacity, out of which the installed coal-fired capacity was 273 GW, which was 47% of the capacity.
