The numbers are moving at different speeds. Solar generation has risen substantially, and wind output has also increased across the states with established projects. The broader renewable generation figures show where these additions are translating into electricity, and generation remains relatively unchanged.

The country generated 59, 503 MU of renewable electricity in August 2026. This is up from 51,375 MU in the same month in 2025. The five-month figure tells a similar story: generation between April and August reached 2,53,568 MU, up from 2,25,647 MU last year.

At the top of the state table are Rajasthan and Gujarat, followed by sizeable volumes by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. However, in the northern region, the picture is less uniform. During the five months, Himachal Pradesh generated less than it did a year earlier, as did Jammu and Kashmir. Moving in the opposite direction was India’s north-east, as its generation rose from 4,384 MU to 6,747 MU. The volumes are still modest, but changes are substantial.

In August, wind generation surpassed 17,800 MU to reach 17,815 MU vis-a-vis 12,894 MU last year. The country generated 69,883 MU from April to August this year compared with 62,344 MU in the corresponding period of 2025. Gujarat recorded 4,759 MU in August, marginally ahead of Tamil Nadu’s 4,722 MU. While Karnataka contributed another 2,965 MU, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh also added sizable quantities.

A look at the five-month numbers and Gujarat moves further ahead with 22,024 MU from Tamil Nadu’s 15,257 MU and Karnataka’s 12,185 MU. Wind generation continues to come largely from states where industry has already built a substantial project base.
