The country is planning to add 70 GW of power generation capacity by 2028. This is set to be the highest addition in a single year, said Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs.
Manohar Lal pointed out the importance of making India's power sector smarter with AI, at an inaugural session of the Central Electricity Authority’s international conference-cum-exhibition on, “Making Indian Power Sector AI-Enabled”
Manohar Lal noted that constructing such an extensive and complicated power network in the future will require generating sufficient electricity alongside managing this process intelligently. He further explained that India has achieved an installed capacity for power generation of around 555 GW and now requires constructing networks capable of predicting electricity requirements.
Lal also emphasized that India needs effective integration of renewable sources and energy storage along with ensuring uninterrupted and affordable access to electricity to end-users.
According to Manohar Lal, AI is both a resource and remedy. AI could be employed to predict electricity generation efficiently, manage the power grid effectively, schedule maintenance beforehand, and detect power cuts ahead of time
