The Tamil Nadu government has formally rolled out the Tamil Nadu Battery Energy Storage Systems Policy, 2026, in a bid to improve grid reliability and shift towards cleaner sources of power generation.
Through an energy department notification, the new policy seeks to develop Tamil Nadu into India’s leading storage state by making huge private investments and upgrading energy infrastructure in line with global standards.
This policy document came out this Tuesday. According to the plan, the state will seek deployment of at least 2.5 GW equivalent to 10 GWh of energy storage capacity over the tenure of the program.
As part of the policy implementation process, it will be done under the supervision of the nodal agency Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited.
The main intention behind the new policy is to deal with the uncertainties posed by variable renewable energy production.
Under the policy framework, there will be different ways to deploy battery systems, either as standalone projects or co-location with renewable plants.
