Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and expressed concern over the evolving security situation in West Asia, stressing the importance of ensuring the unhindered transit of energy and goods.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, Pezeshkian briefed Modi on recent developments in Iran and the wider region. The Prime Minister reiterated India’s position that all issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Modi also highlighted India’s priority regarding the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the region.
The emphasis on energy transit comes amid concerns over disruptions to shipping routes in West Asia, including the Strait of Hormuz, a key global chokepoint through which a significant share of the world’s oil trade passes.
India relies heavily on crude supplies shipped through the Gulf, making stability in maritime energy routes critical for its energy security.
The two leaders agreed to remain in touch as the regional situation evolves.
