The government has said that it remains committed to the energy security of the nation as the US passed the Russia Sanctions Bill. “India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its people,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
Earlier, the US House passed ‘Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026’, which allows the US President unprecedented powers to impose 100 percent tariffs on nations purchasing oil from Russia, including Russian oil and gas buyers. India and China are major buyers of Russian oil and gas. The Bill will now require presidential assent by US President Donald Trump.
“As stated on several earlier occasions, India remains firmly committed to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion people. It will continue to do so through diversified sourcing and in line with evolving market dynamics,” PTI reported, quoting the MEA. The MEA also said the issue has been “discussed at high levels in recent months with various US interlocutors.” The Indian side has clearly articulated its potential implications not just for the bilateral relationship but also for the international energy market.
