India added a record 6.05 GW of wind energy capacity in 2025–26, marking the highest-ever annual addition and a 46 percent increase over the previous year, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) said on Monday.
The addition takes the country’s cumulative installed wind power capacity past 56 GW, signalling renewed momentum in the sector. Officials attributed the increase to improved policy clarity, better transmission readiness, competitive tariff discovery and a stronger project pipeline.
States such as Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra accounted for a significant share of the new capacity, supported by the expansion of wind-solar hybrid projects and wider adoption of green energy open access. The government said a series of policy measures, including concessional customs duty on components, waiver of inter-state transmission charges and competitive bidding frameworks, have helped accelerate deployment.
The growth in wind capacity is expected to contribute to India’s broader renewable energy target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030.
