The government has facilitated the exchange of green ammonia purchase and supply agreements under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, marking the operationalisation of a domestic green ammonia ecosystem.

The agreements cover an allocation of about 7.24 lakh tonnes per annum (TPA) of green ammonia, linked to 13 fertiliser units across the country. Officials said the 10-year agreements provide demand certainty, enabling financial closure and investments in large-scale green ammonia production.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said the move will help reduce dependence on imported grey ammonia and strengthen domestic supply chains. He added that the initiative is expected to result in foreign exchange savings of about $2.5 billion over 10 years. The bidding process, conducted by the Solar Energy Corporation of India, discovered prices in the range of ₹49.75 to ₹64.74 per kg, compared with global benchmarks of around ₹110 per kg, officials said.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader push under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to scale up production and use of green hydrogen and its derivatives in sectors such as fertilisers, refineries, steel and transport.
