The Centre on Friday warned consumers against storing petrol or diesel in loose containers, saying such practices pose serious safety risks even as adequate fuel stocks are available at retail outlets across the country.
In an advisory, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said petrol pumps across India have sufficient supplies of petrol and diesel and there is no need for consumers to store fuel.
The advisory follows an incident at a retail outlet in Tamil Nadu where petrol was reportedly being taken in loose containers. The concerned petrol pump has since been suspended and appropriate action has been taken, the ministry said.
Consumers have been advised not to take or store petrol or other fuels in loose or inappropriate containers, warning that such practices can create serious safety hazards.
Retail outlets and dealers across the country have also been instructed to strictly follow safety guidelines while dispensing fuel. The ministry said any violation will invite strict action.
