GAIL India is set to deploy ₹600 crore for the construction of the heating plant in its Ratnagiri LNG terminal. This will help the terminal fully utilize its capacity to gasify super-chilled fuel. The heat plant will be commissioned before June 2027 as per RK Singhal, the head of business development of the company.
The terminal presently possesses an annual storage capacity of 5 million metric tons; however, it is functioning at only around half that volume due to non-readiness of the heat plant. The construction will eliminate this bottleneck at the terminal.
In the past, Ratnagiri LNG had relied on waste heat produced by a power plant owned by some other company to vaporize the fuel. However, this power plant is currently not operational, making it impossible for the facility to get access to the necessary heat needed for the gasification process.
Additionally, GAIL India has started building a smaller captive power plant in this regard. Once completed, this power plant will help produce heat for the LNG facility as well as provide another form of power input to help carry out the gasification process.
