Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (JVVNL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet to collaborate and develop India's first sodium-ion battery energy storage system project on the transformer distribution level in Rajasthan. The project intends to analyze the technical and economic viability of utilizing the sodium-ion battery system.

JVVNL and GEAPP have issued a Request for Proposal (RfP) at the upcoming DUM 2026 event seeking bids to develop a 250 kW / 250 kWh sodium-ion BESS pilot demonstration project at K.L. Saini Stadium, Jaipur. This project would aim to explore if the new battery storage system could assist distribution companies in better managing local grid demands.

A pilot project will test sodium-ion batteries by exposing the technology under actual distribution-network conditions. Testing would occur under extreme temperature conditions prevalent in Rajasthan’s summers.

The pilot project seeks to compare sodium-ion batteries with other available battery types, including lithium-ion batteries, in terms of their effectiveness, reliability, safety, and cost efficiency.
