The Centre has notified a new regulatory framework for the laying and expansion of natural gas pipelines, introducing time-bound approvals and deemed clearances to address delays in infrastructure rollout.
The Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, issued under the Essential Commodities Act and effective immediately, lays down a uniform system for laying, building, operating and expanding pipeline infrastructure across the country, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas said in a press release.
The order provides standardised procedures, timelines and charges, aimed at reducing regulatory uncertainty and variation across states and local authorities.
It also seeks to address delays linked to land access by setting out mechanisms for access, compensation and restoration, along with a defined dispute resolution process.
The government said the framework is expected to improve ease of doing business in the sector by simplifying procedures, reducing compliance requirements and providing greater predictability.
The order is aimed at enabling faster expansion of City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks, improving last-mile connectivity and widening access to piped natural gas (PNG) for households, transport and industrial use.
The move is also intended to support a shift towards cleaner fuels by expanding the reach of natural gas infrastructure as part of India’s transition to a gas-based economy.
