The Centre has reduced central excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹10 per litre each to shield consumers from rising global fuel prices amid the West Asia crisis, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.
“In view of the West Asia crisis, the central excise duty on petrol and diesel for domestic consumption has been reduced by ₹10 per litre each. This will provide protection to consumers from rise in prices,” Sitharaman said in a post on X.
The government has also imposed export duties on petroleum products to prioritise domestic availability. Export duty on diesel has been set at ₹21.5 per litre, while Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) will attract a duty of ₹29.5 per litre.
“Duties have been imposed on exports of diesel at ₹21.5 per litre and on ATF at ₹29.5 per litre. This will ensure adequate availability of these products for domestic consumption,” she said, adding that Parliament has been informed of the measures.
The move comes amid heightened volatility in global oil markets and concerns over supply disruptions due to tensions in West Asia, a key source of India’s crude imports.
