The Centre has asked states and union territories to consider targeted distribution of 5 kg free trade LPG (FTL) cylinders based on local requirements, in coordination with oil marketing companies, as part of measures to manage fuel supply amid the evolving situation.
At a review meeting chaired by the Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Thursday, states were also directed to prioritise LPG supply for domestic consumers and essential sectors to ensure uninterrupted availability. Officials said states should step up enforcement against hoarding, diversion and misinformation, including through raids and inspections, to prevent panic and misuse of supplies.
The Centre maintained that there is no disruption in LPG availability, including for migrant workers, but said targeted distribution may be used where required to manage demand. States were also advised to discourage the use of LPG in dual-fuel auto-rickshaws where petrol alternatives are available, to ease pressure on LPG consumption. Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh were commended for enforcement action, while others were urged to strengthen monitoring and take strict action against violations.
