The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has directed inverter manufacturers supplying rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana to ensure that inverter-level data, including generation data, is stored exclusively within India. Under an Office Memorandum issued on August 17, MNRE said applications, monitoring and control servers, as well as cloud-hosted data, must reside in an encrypted, secure and protected environment within the country.

Inverter OEMs have been given 30 days to submit written confirmation to REC, with a copy to MNRE, regarding compliance with existing secure-communication requirements and Indian data residency. They must also nominate an official point of contact. Failure to submit the confirmation within the stipulated period will mean the manufacturer cannot install its systems under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. MNRE has also directed OEMs to provide daily rooftop-solar generation data, mapped to inverter serial numbers, to the National Portal through a uniform API.
