Delhi has approved a revised Solar Energy Policy that will allow residential consumers using up to 400 units of electricity a month to install rooftop solar systems of up to 3 kW without bearing the upfront installation cost. The government will meet the balance installation expense after factoring in central and state subsidies. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the programme targets 2.3 lakh households and 500 MW of rooftop solar capacity by March 2027.

The revised policy seeks to address the initial cost that has held back adoption under the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Instead of receiving financial support through incentives spread over five years, eligible households will get the benefit upfront when the system is installed. Application and registration charges for residential systems have also been waived. Selected vendors will provide free operation and maintenance for five years, according to the government.
