India’s oil and power numbers for July 2026 presents a clear contrast. Domestic crude and condensed production was just 2.29 MMT, against 23.94, MMT of oil imports. At the same time, refineries processed 23.77 MMT and product exports stood at 5.45 MMT. In electricity, thermal plant generated 119.36 BU out of 182.52 BU, far ahead of other sources.

Oil and Gas

The July 2026 data underscores that India is significantly dependent on overseas oil and gas, as indigenous crude oil production was 2.29 MMT vis-à-vis 23.94 MMT oil imports. Refining throughput was around the same as total oil imports at 23.77 MMT. India also exported 5.45 MMT of petroleum products, more than twice the 2.53 MT it imported.

Domestic gas production stood at 2,841 MMSCM and LNG imports added 2.2 MMT. The numbers point to a large refining base serving both domestic demand and overseas markets, but with crude supply still overwhelmingly dependent on imports.

Power and Utilities

As per July 2026 power data, system still driven by thermal generation, which produced 119.36 BU, nearly two-thirds of total generation of 182.52 BU. Renewable sources, including small hydro, contributed 38.50 BU, and large hydro added 17.75 BU and nuclear 5.40 BU. Peak demand reached 2,70, 322 MW, with 2,70,203 MW met, a shortfall of just 119 MW. The capacity additions reported for August were 3,445. 30 MW of solar and 383.43 MW of wind. Cumulatively, the figure show thermal power continuing to carry the bulk of generation even as solar and wind capacity epand.

The numbers point to an energy system in transition, but not yet one where domestic supply or renewables can displace conventional sources at scale. Oil imports remain several times domestic production, and thermal power continues to meet electricity demand. August’s addition of 3,445 MW of solar and 383 MW of wind shows the direction of capacity growth, but the July generation mix makes clear where the system still depends most heavily.
