The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) marked its 20th Foundation Day as India’s natural gas infrastructure and city gas distribution (CGD) network continue to expand.

Speaking at the occasion, Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, highlighted efforts to increase the share of natural gas in India’s primary energy mix from around 6 percent and position gas as a cleaner, reliable and affordable energy source.

Nearly the entire country has now been authorised for CGD, while around 35,000 km of natural gas pipelines have been authorised. The unified tariff framework has also improved access to natural gas in distant and underserved regions, he added.

According to Puri, the expansion of PNG connections has accomplished the growth in gas infrastructure. During National PNG Drive 2.0, from January to June 2026, around 12.10 lakh new PNG connections and 15.31 lakh domestic piped natural gas (DPNG) registrations were recorded.

The union minister said daily DPNG additions increased from 4,702 to around 7,000, while daily billed consumer additions rose from around 2,781 to 7,500 during the period.

He also said India maintained uninterrupted essential gas supplies during the West Asia crisis, while the CGD sector continued to expand and strengthen coordination with state governments and other stakeholders.

PNGRB has also advanced technology-enabled regulation through the National Hydrocarbon Infrastructure Monitoring System, which brings infrastructure, administrative, transport, geographical and satellite data onto a single platform.

The regulator is also developing a regulatory framework aligned with India’s sustainability and Net Zero objectives.
