To form a joint venture company for developing nuclear power projects in the country, NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL).

As per the MoU, the to-be-established joint venture company will build nuclear power projects and other reactor technologies based on a 700 MW Indigenous Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) of various capacities, aligned with mutually agreed terms. Besides, investment in existing and upcoming 700 MW PHWR projects of NPCIL will be explored under the collaboration.

NLCIL has reportedly said that the development takes on greater significance after the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India Bill, which aims to modernise the legislative and policy framework governing the nuclear sector, was passed in December 2025.

This MoU comes at a time when the country is making efforts to expand reliable clean energy generation baseload and nuclear power is being increasingly viewed as one of the foremost sources to balance intermittent renewable energy sources. Presently, India has about 8.8 GW of installed nuclear power capacity. By 2047, it wants to reach 100 GW nuclear power capacity.
