The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended the existing regulations to permit automakers to manufacture and distribute FFVs running entirely on E100 and B100 fuels, under the Motor Vehicles Act,. Prior to this amendment, only up to E85 (85% ethanol fuelled) vehicles were permitted under these regulations.

These amendments now offer the necessary homologation process (legal framework for certification) enabling manufacturers to roll out E100 FFV models, which have already undergone rigorous testing.

The revised CMVR, Rule 115, 1989 specifies that emission certification tables will now include both E100 and E85 blends. This amendment completes the emission standards and protocols for manufacturers (original equipment manufacturers).

MoRTH has expressly clarified that E85 or E100 may be utilized exclusively with Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFV) and should not be considered as suitable for any other type of vehicles that can run with other ethanol blends. Additionally, it needs to be noted that according to this notification, "do not require owners of existing vehicles to switch to E85 or modify their vehicles either at present or in the future"

Commercial transport vehicles and construction machinery have received clarity in regulations by way of amendment of (B10) with (B100) in the test protocol.
