To deepen cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, India and France have agreed to discuss opportunities in conventional nuclear power and emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and advanced modular reactors during bilateral talks held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice.
With recent legislative reforms in India’s nuclear sector, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, new avenues for collaboration and investment by foreign companies, including French firms, were opened.
He added that after the SHANTI Act, 2025 (Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India) enacted India’s nuclear landscape has significantly transformed by allowing private sector participation and foreign direct investment in the sector.
Misri also added that the recent development will create opportunities for French nuclear companies as they will be able to directly participate in India’s nuclear energy programme, either independently or in partnership with Indian private sector enterprises.
