On behalf of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reportedly invited bids for Odisha’s 80 MW / 320 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) turnkey development project. This is a part of CIL’s broader renewable energy expansion plan, which entails the company’s 5 GW renewable energy capacity target by 2028-29.
Operated by Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (OPTCL), the BESS project will be developed at four designated grid substations on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis, including Padampur, New Bolangir, Bhatli, and Basta. These sites will have a 20 MW / 80 MWh storage capacity, with 80 MW / 320 MWh total installed capacity.
The project will be divided into two clusters. Each cluster will have 40 MW / 160 MWh of capacity. The energy storage systems will help GRIDCO Ltd manage peak electricity demand, improve grid stability, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the power system.
