A critical shortage of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Erode and Namakkal districts has disrupted daily operations for taxi drivers and motorists making them wait for hours for fuel.

Over 100 cars and multiple Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses were queued up outside a few private CNG filling stations at Vediyarasampalayam and Pallipalayam in Namakkal district on Tuesday, reports ET Energy World.

As per a statement by a driver, the shortage in Erode and surrounding areas had persisted for several days impacting their livelihoods and forcing call-taxi operators to turn down routine bookings.

“We were spending considerable time travelling from one fuel station to another in search of CNG,” said S Palanivel, a taxi driver.

Moreover, vehicle owners noted that even when gas was available at select outlets, government transport vehicles were prioritised more leading to longer waiting hours for private vehicles and taxi operators.
