Assam has set a target of generating 3,500 MW of solar power by 2030, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said while inaugurating a 70 MW solar power plant at Khudigaon in Dhubri district.

The Chief Minister said the state’s installed solar capacity has reached 680 MW and is expected to rise to around 750 MW by April, as new projects are commissioned. “Assam’s solar energy target is 3,500 MW by 2030,” Sarma said in a post on X after the inauguration.

The Khudigaon solar project has been jointly developed by SJVN Green Energy Ltd.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the project has been built at a cost of over ₹350 crore and is expected to generate around 141 million units of electricity annually, while reducing nearly 1.15 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions.

Sarma said the project would strengthen Assam’s move towards self-sufficiency in power generation. He added that another 50 MW solar project being implemented by SJVN at Borsolla in Sonitpur district is scheduled for completion by April, which would take the state’s solar capacity to about 730 MW.

The Chief Minister also said the State government plans to implement development projects, including renewable energy installations, on government land cleared of encroachments, to prevent re-encroachment and generate employment.
