Electric truck makers will face tighter localisation requirements from April 1, 2027, following the latest amendment to the Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) under the PM E-DRIVE scheme.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries has specified a wider set of manufacturing activities that must be carried out domestically for N2 and N3 category e-trucks. For traction motors, this includes magnet fitment, rotor and stator assembly, shaft and bearing fitment, along with enclosure, connector and cable work.

The rules also cover integrated traction motor and transmission systems. Domestic manufacturing will extend to specified transmission and controller components. For motor controllers and inverters, the prescribed processes include assembling electronic components, semiconductors, and connectors on PCBs; high-voltage connector and cable fitment; heat sinks; enclosures; and software or firmware flashing. The amendment pushes the e-truck sector towards deeper local manufacturing of critical electric powertrain components.
