US President Donald Trump has said the US could bring its conflict with Iran to an end within two to three weeks. He added that the ongoing US military operation would be concluded soon. Trump said the US aims to neutralise Iran’s capabilities before exiting the region, while also indicating the possibility of a negotiated deal before the end of hostilities.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the objective from the outset had been to eliminate Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons. Trump also called on international allies to take on a greater role in securing the Strait of Hormuz, expressing frustration over what he described as limited support from countries such as the United Kingdom.
Despite persistent strikes on shipping and regional infrastructure, Trump said there was “no real threat” to the strait, which carries about 20 percent of global oil supply, and added that countries dependent on the route should contribute more actively to its security. He said the US is not prepared to withdraw its military presence from efforts to secure the strait amid the current situation.
