Ashu Shinghal is GAIL Gas Ltd’s new Chief Executive Officer. Before taking up his new role in the GAIL (India) Ltd’s subsidiary, he was Managing Director of Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL). Shinghal is a mechanical engineering graduate from NIT, Silchar, and attained MBA in Operation Management.


Joined GAIL as a Graduate Engineer Trainee in 1991, he held several key roles. As the company’s Executive Director, he played an instrumental role in corporate strategy, planning & advocacy, risk management, total quality management and sustainable developments.


Shinghal’s 35 years of professional journey in the hydrocarbon sector involved him in natural gas pipelines, petrochemicals, city gas distribution, and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) projects.


At MGL, Shinghal led the company to double its revenue and market capitalisation, its highest ever Profit After Tax, highest number of domestic piped natural gas connections in a year and record growth in the number of CNG stations and sales volume. He also spearheaded the company’s diversification into compressed bio gas, LNG transportation and battery manufacturing through subsidiaries and joint ventures.


Working in close association with the GAIL top management in strategic decision-making area, Shinghal has been a key liaison point for stakeholder engagement initiatives under natural gas advocacy programme with various multilateral organisations, industry associations’ committees and think tanks. As the company’s Chief Risk and Strategy Officer, he successfully managed price risk, index risk (HH, Brent), and currency risk under LNG contracts which impact the bottom-line.


He has also served as Chairman of Mahanagar LNG Pvt Ltd (MLPL) and International Battery Company India Pvt Ltd and Director on the Boards of ONGC Petro Additions Ltd and Talcher Fertilisers Ltd.


Shinghal’s appointment as CEO, GAIL Gas Ltd assumes significance as India is on a city gas distribution expansion as the country is building the infrastructure for it to increase natural gas’ share in the energy mix.
