The government has said that Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) supply to households may be discontinued after three months in cases where consumers do not switch to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) despite the availability of such connectivity, under a new order aimed at accelerating gas network expansion, according to PTI.

The provision, a part of the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, notified by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas under the Essential Commodities Act. The order states that LPG supply to an address shall cease three months after communication by the authorised entity if the household does not apply for a PNG connection where pipeline infrastructure exists.

However, LPG supply will continue in cases where it is not technically feasible to provide a piped connection. In such instances, the authorised entity will issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC), which may be reviewed if connectivity becomes possible. The move is aimed at promoting the use of piped gas and supporting expansion of pipeline infrastructure. It also provides for time-bound approvals, deemed clearances and a uniform framework to facilitate faster rollout of gas networks across regions.
